SUSUMU YOUKO is born to Susumu Katashi - a native of Ishigaki, and Uehara Saki - born on the mainland, but possessing ancestry deep within the Ryukyuan Islands & former monarchy. The couple is wealthy, happy. They bestow upon their daughter two types of love: conditional of the father, unconditional of the mother. She grows up not knowing what it is she’s done wrong to cause her father’s eyes to look from her / she grows up, tears upon her mother’s breast as she is promised every night she is beautiful. She grows up knowing prejudice / xenophobia / colorism from those who share a flag, but not an identity. She grows up with a tongue baptized in an endangered language - rare wine - and one snubbed by mainland - fiery liquor - before it can taste the commonplace of that spoken widespread - mere water; she is raised bilingual, a tertiary language to commune with the mainland introduced when she is ten / anecdotes and simple words, phrases of a sister endangered tongue scattered throughout her upbringing. She is raised understanding that her people live … but their culture is dying.She is taken from all that she knows, loves, feels at peace with when she is fourteen. Her parent’s jobs (with an independent banking firm based in the Okinawa Prefecture; Saki the Chief Operating Officer / Katashi the Chief Financial Officer) move them from Ishigaki, and the comfort of nearby Yaeyama Islands, to one of Tokyo’s wards. Though it is small, quiet compared to neighboring wards and others more well-known, it is still a vast difference from that which she came to understand as “home”. It is a culture shock, a disruption to her norm -- it spurs turmoil alongside the flames of hurt / desperation / confusion which grow from the match her father strikes when he looks at her and sees the child his wife wanted, loves … but one he never did. She only finds solace in activities her parents consider “acting out” -- a shift of study upon Shooto Mixed Martial Arts (from traditional Okinawan martial arts), a friend group with an interest in parkour (danger, adrenaline, trespassing…), and a minimal application of herself (bare necessity to get “best” marks) in academics. “TAKEHIKO” begins to ring throughout circles of her peers, a laugh upon her oddity for enjoyment of such “masculine” sport / simultaneous praise for her ferocity, unparalleled talent in each. They see, long before she, that she is a “martial prince” … a warrior."TAKEHIKO" finds a final straw among those in her school. Silently, she endures the bigotry of classmates possessing much lighter skin / force their standard of beauty upon her … it is only when a friend she has made is subjected to torment for associating with “the transfer student” / “that backward girl” that she looses herself-control. She offers a cold challenge, confident in her capability despite a just-healed fracture of her femur / they name the place to be a train station in Shizume, a ward neighboring Edogawa. She accepts. She confronts the primary offenders / her rage, unbridled, leaves her standing amid wounded adversaries. Her fist crushes a nose, her fingers welt bruises into a bicep as she dislocates a shoulder, she rings ears (her own, and another’s) as her forehead collides sickeningly with that of a boy her age.It is 2009 when she first goes blind in light of her own pain & anger, made manifest.

YOUKO, "TAKEHIKO" is seen in this violent (a broken nose the greatest casualty of those she confronts) act, thought not by any she knows -- it is a man only a handful of years older than herself, heavyset but of kind disposition, that tells her “If you need to burn off some anger, come to Bar HOMRA”. She keeps his words in mind, but before a question (crucial, curious) can be voiced, he runs / she finds out why: Tokyo Metropolitan Police (Community Safety Bureau) are upon the scene, and she is the only individual not upon the ground / not groaning, sobbing in wake of defeat.She is suspended from school for three weeks, the others involved for one. She cries injustice, unfairness - the reasoning stands: she committed greater violence and harm than they. The three weeks at home are silent, stiff, full of questions unspoken / full of anger. It is as she returns to school that at last she looks upon results of her actions: fearful gratitude / fear / rumors / disapproval of those she hoped to protect. She returns home, at last cries in her outrage, confusion.

Her father -- reserved, pacifistic, calculating, soft-spoken, who holds no love for the beautiful child his wife has given him / has never once treated her poorly -- strikes her, the ring upon his hand cuts her cheek … the suddenness of his action warrants a shriek from his beloved wife, sends his daughter off her feet / fallen upon the couch. He lets loose the feelings that (must have) pent up for so long: he claims, unwavering, she is no daughter of his / she has, this time, crossed a line that cannot be erased even if it may eventually fade. The mother is in shock, crying / the father is seething, emotion at last upon his face though it is not the love YOUKO has so desperately sought. The daughter is stunned, hurting, crying. She turns to her room, strikes her hair (reaching her shoulderblades, long / silky / straight) off with an unceremonious knife. She skips school the next day, no sleep to be had the night prior as she hears her mother scream at her father, sob in anguish she’s never imagined the woman could feel from another room in their penthouse. She skips school the day following, feels more alienated than ever before.TAKEHIKO steps through the doors of Bar HOMRA in October of 2009 / she sparks interest of the bartender, shadow king -- she shakes hands with the real, demon-king, his flame wreathes her / burns … yet even as it burns, it does not hurt more than it startles … it then concentrates overtop her heart, sucks the wind from her. It is as existing members bare their marks to her that she tugs down her shirt, shock undeniable as she looks upon the fireburst emblazoned, now / evermore, upon her sternum. She is one of them, she is sixteen. She is one of the youngest among them besides a boy only a few days younger & a girl at the age of nine.The newly-christened "delinquent" returns to school one week later, to find rumors have spread. She is relieved from her membership in the Shooto Club, as the group which focuses dedication / respect / self-control has no need for the member of “a violent gang”. The friends with which she practices parkour drift away, their reasoning being they “want a release, not to actually be delinquents''. She is ostracised from those small collectives, supports, she has found & taken comfort in since moving to Tokyo. It is three months before she runs away / leaves her parents’ home, able to find a small apartment for herself within Shizume courtesy of the shadow king’s connections with the underbelly society she has willingly drowned herself in. She leaves most belongings, takes only essential / leaves her mother a note, blots upon paper from tears apparent.She is eighteen when she applies for university in Kunitachi, interested in furthering her education / her natural intelligence left wanting more than the stimulation which can be provided to the standard life of a Red Clansman / member of a gang. The shadow king offers to back her education provided she makes his penny spent worthwhile / she is accepted without flaw or suspicion of her incomplete high school transcript … again due to the intervention of the shadow king. It is attending university in Kunitachi (a commute each day, a small price to pay for higher education) that she meets a man - russian / collected / idealist / medical studies - who sparks intellectual interest within her, the certain stimulation she has desired for little more than one year now. She falls victim to his practised charisma & engagement, fails to see the killer that wears his demeanor as a disguise / his body as its meatsuit.

She is eighteen when they meet for a dinner prior to semester break / when she is drugged via injection of vecuronium bromide, to her knee, under the table at which they sit. By the eyes of the law, a child is taken to his Chiyoda apartment, bound to a chair by her wrists and ankles / incapable of fighting back against the anesthetic he double-doses her with due to her level of consciousness he perceives. The youth is controlled by another / harmed – violating her basic fear and betraying her basic desire: to protect herself. A serial killer makes her his victim, expects her to not see the light of the coming day… her childhood is to die screaming. His scalpel plunges into her chest while she is still conscious, disoriented -- she screams ( the sound hoarse, shattered by vocal chords paralysed ) with an agony she has never before been able to conceptualize / agony no human should have to endure. His work is rough, unceremonious, uncaring -- he cuts into muscle / damages nerves as he cuts through her torso, removes her of her breasts. She is a lucky one: her mind blankets her in unconsciousness as he severs the left from her body horrendously / she is not awake to feel the further impact of his psychosis against her being. Nor is she awake to feel the strike of the scalpel into her abdomen -- he carves into her belly to remove her uterus / ovaries, promising children to never be had -- removing them from her future before she truly even considers the possibility. In spite of his wickedness, he tends the horrid wounds he has wrought with care / sutures / disinfectant / bandages -- he does not wish his victims to be anything less than “pure” or “ideal” as they pass from this life. He is a fanatic, skopet - one captivated by the teachings of skoptsy, a member of the small groups which survived repression of the Soviet Union.YOUKO dies in the building, she is eighteen.
TAKEHIKO survives the ordeal, wakes the next morning.YOUKO is the innocence of girl to the world, stripped.
TAKEHIKO is a survivor -- she has no grave, as victims do.Anna, safe in her bedroom within Bar HOMRA, knows something has happened before Takehiko is able to make contact. The little girl sits bolt upright in bed, a marble she has synchronized with her fierce older sister cracking irreparably.It is a starburst from the inside: radiant, beautiful & tragic, heartbreaking … all in one. She knows Takehiko is hurt & in mortal peril.The fighter cannot find solace in a mental clarity; she is only able to set his room ( the building, entirely, unrelated civilians falling victim to her arsonry ) ablaze, sear the shape of her hand into his face, scorch his tongue beyond repair before she escapes. He has not seen the last of her. Her shattered body manages to drag itself to the train station of Chiyoda / her broken mind manages to call the shadow king … she cannot convey a proper message, but he understands something is very, terribly, wrong; Anna’s warning has reached him first. He enters the train car Anna points to to find Takehiko’s body -- bloodied through bandages / mangled beneath -- alongside that of an elder brother she has found within the Clan of Red. the shadow king / father figure carries the girl, unconscious, into the bar draped between his arms.Takehiko is unconscious for three weeks, comatose / her body protecting her from its pain. The Red Clan desires revenge; they have no name nor face to go with the individual who has violated their sister so.The king smoulders with rage / the vassal works to contain his hellfire, the shadow king assures a doctor -- finest the black market can offer -- helps the woman recover, regain consciousness. At last she wakes, mind fogged by opioid painkillers … it does not take long for the horror of her ordeal to overwhelm the sluggish thoughts -- she vomits / she screams / she sobs. She does not speak of what has occurred / her brothers, father figure(s) all have seen regardless -- they cannot hide their knowledge of the grievous wounds which threatened her life. She wishes to recover on her own, spends a month more bound to her apartment, determined to endure tremendous pain alone. Her struggle is in silence for three weeks more, trauma rendering her mute.It is as six weeks pass that she dares to look upon the injuries she has so deliberately avoided seeing even as she placed fresh bandages upon them … the stitches which have held her flesh together / allowed her body to long since removed. She bares herself to the mirror in her bathroom, cannot help but retch as she looks upon the revolting lacerations which dig deep into her body / cut into muscle meant to be steadfast. Her fingers trace the marks / she fights the nausea which rises within -- her fingers fall into the ridges carved into her chest, gruesome / pitted / sunken to reflect the damaged muscle beneath. Her eyes fall to the wounds upon her lower abdomen, raised / glaring red-pinkish, and further depth of the man’s actions hit her. She realizes what he has taken from her… she cannot help but mourn as she pulls her hand from her body. ( her eyes see only blood ).It is as she looks upon her body that grief overwhelms her. She screams, she vomits -- fingers dig into the newfound scars, send pain through her being as the wounds do not cease to hurt despite their “healing”. She cannot accept what has happened … she can barely comprehend it.TAKEHIKO endures the majority of the next year; she fights to recover / fights to regain the strength lost, permanently compromised. She remains fragile at the mention of her body / believes it to be ugly, disgusting, something that represents weakness … something that represents, “you lost”.

She understands her flattened chest / inability to bear a child to be a lack of womanhood -- once more she feels turmoil she is so familiar with. She comes to believe she will never be viewed as “desirable” to any man; and even if one does mistakenly grow attracted to her, she does not know if she can trust someone to come so close … as the one who ruined her did not even come closer than an intellectual spark, yet he sundered her body without mercy.She comes to believe she is unfit to be seen by others / unfit to be touched by gentle hands.It is as the full year passes that one of her Clansmen - gentle older brother, vassal of the king -- is murdered in cold blood. The shadow king / father figure carries the man, lifeless, into the bar draped between his arms. Though not up to par with the podium she is used to standing upon, Takehiko participates in the war her Clan of Red wages against that of Blue, Silver … takes Ashinaka Gakuen & its students hostage in order to rout out the Colorless King. Just two weeks after the loss of the Vassal, her Clan suffers the loss of its King. Fragmented, HOMRA is disbanded by the shadow king -- he states there is nothing left for them; his friends, dead … his obligation to keep the bar open as “King’s Domain”, gone … he does not lock it, even so -- and re-form sixth months later. In her twentieth year, Takehiko is named the Vassal of the new Red King - Anna Kushina - and reaffirms loyalty to assist the girl in bringing the Red Clan into a new era. Plagued by the poor reputation of RENGOKUSHA / HOMRA’s predecessor, Anna vows HOMRA, anew, shall become better than they were known to be … Anna vows their flame “shall not burn” as they have so readily done in the past.

canon divergence occurs at this point, between the missing kings movie & season two return of kings.Takehiko receives a proposition from the Green King (sworn enemy: unreasonable / chaotic / selfish) of mutual interest. He dares to claim similarity between them -- bodies, all but destroyed / life, permitted to continue by the power of the Dresden Slate alone -- yet it is enough to draw her in. He is a master manipulator & he has sunk his claws into the Vassal of Red – the most basic human instinct ( fear ) is now used to control her as a piece upon his chessboard. She works with him, formulating an effort that could stop the Blue / Silver Clans from destroying the Dresden Slate … potentially destroying her (their) tether to vitality & constitution. Only when she is no longer able to tolerate the sense of “disloyalty” she has committed does she reveal her meetings with the Green King, her plotting to act against Blue / Silver, to her own King. She begs forgiveness for acting behind the girl’s back, and yet she is told there is nothing to forgive: she cannot be shamed for wanting to live.A young woman, now, stands with Red / Green as they combat Blue / Silver, protects the Slate from previously-planned destruction in light of the Blue King’s failure to control it. Liberated, the Slate proceeds to act without control -- it reaches out to every corner of Japan. Its consequences / benefits / influence is unprecedented, unknown … a variable entirely new.TAKEHIKO keeps her head above water in the world she has lived in now for ten years / created into something anew, now three years prior. She is twenty-three, and monitors the forced surge of activity from SCEPTER4 / TOKIJIKUIN alike. The duties of the aforementioned organizations (Clans of Blue/Gold, respectively) encompass working with, monitoring, controlling individuals touched by the Slate (granted power) without the medium of a King betwixt. The Slate’s unregulated activity increased the number of individuals with newfound powers (some weak, some strong -- some harmless, some lethal) tenfold. She, too, works alongside her Clansmen in keeping these newborn Strains out of the territory of her Clan; to this day it envelops the entirety of the Shizume, the Tokyo ward. She remains abreast of developments from the Prime Minister of Japan, understanding that her role in the conflict three years prior was absolutely pivotal to the future-turned-present they live now … she supports academies that have sprung up, fostered by the Clans of Blue / Silver / Gold to teach those touched by the Slate of their powers, and how to control them.Three years more pass. The year is now 2019.It is only now that she has had time enough to envision the literal face of her massive trauma without immediately retching… and thereby is able to establish a bloodthirsty desire with only his face in mind. She hunts down the one that attempted to kill her, instead only succeeded in maiming her & damaging her in all ways, irreparably. She can only cope with what he did to her by thinking herself a monster / ugly / inhuman … she feels momentary relief / immediate shame upon such to realize she was not a random event, that there were others similar to her. The only difference is those previously targeted by the man no longer lived. She, twenty-six, exacts her justice -- synonymous with vengeance. He is dead by her hand, but not her flame her King has proclaimed “shall not burn”.It’s not too terribly long after that Takehiko realizes she can no longer keep quenched the thirst she has for blood of those she finds comparable to the man who ruined her: those who abuse the women in their lives, daughters/wives/sisters/cousins/girlfriends, those who traffick women (even if it is a woman at the head of an operation…), those who force drug addiction upon women attempting to make their way in their worlds, sexual predators, rapists, brutal dons, abusive pimps … scum of the world who would harm, bring ruin to the women of the earth. She seeks disproportionate revenge: she wishes to see them brought to “justice”, and so she acts accordingly. Where the law fails the women who have suffered by their hand, TAKEHIKO steps in. She forces confessions from their lips, recorded, and leaves their unconscious, battered body / recording at the doorstep of Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.TAKEHIKO works to fulfill her own disproportionate revenge / works as a bounty hunter, debt collector / maintains suitable cover at the Toyosu Fish Market in light of insomnia’s plague. She functions as an emissary between the Red / Green Kings. When she must travel between prefectures, Takehiko utilizes the 2017 Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS she has come to own in light of Shouhei teaching her how to drive one. She is a crucial component in the New Kingdom of Red as it exists, brought about from instilling her hope in the Green King’s dream with the support of the Red King. She intends to live her life as long as she can within the world she has helped shaped.TAKEHIKO (warrior, valkyrie -- modern chooser of the slain) does not know how long her fire will burn / how much time she may have left -- she has felt the weakness present within her body when even the power of the Howling Flame cannot spare her its tremendous suffering.
